It’s impossible to know what helped shape our family resolve to persevere through the difficulties that life presented. My Dad had a keen sense of the importance of being true to his ideology. A conversation with my Mum revealed the required mindset to survive Hitler’s bombs that exploded on nearby streets.
Apart from heredity, perhaps my personal inspiration came from my parents’ lives and a life-long admiration of Sir Winston Churchill, whom Londoners affectionately called Winnie. Although I did not have to live through Hitler’s Blitz, years later, I was a bomb warden during the IRA terrorist bombings of London.
