When the pilot in the previous chapter tried to land the plane, he was figuratively caught playing on a sticky wicket, which the Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable defines as:
"A cricket pitch that has been drying after rain and is difficult to bat on; a tricky or awkward situation. The term is recorded in its literal sense from 1882, in a reference to the Australians finding themselves on a sticky wicket; the first figurative example is found in the 1950s." (Knowles)
Tricky and awkward are appropriate adjectives to describe the challenges which my wife and I faced, as we owned a multi-tenant office building. Despite difficulties, we always went to bat.
